As we look forward to summer, Royal takes a look back at a classic R&B tune with a rework of Baby Bash’s “Suga Suga”. We absolutely love the extended instrumentals and wanted to find out more about how this beatmaker from Maryland got his tunes so fly. Fire up the player and learn a little more about this CrackBeetz Records signee who has now produced a string of popular releases while also working as a sound engineer for other artists in the exploding Mid-Atlantic beat scene.
*You push a lot of music out that you call “refixes”. For those that haven’t seen the term much, how would this differ from a “remix” and how did you get into this type of editing?*
Honestly, I just love the way the word sounds when I say it hahaha. I think technically a remix is officially commissioned by the person you are remixing and get stems from them, and a refix what you personally would have done if you made the song. I could be totally wrong though, either way it just rolls off the tongue nicely so I stuck with it.
*Everyone and their mama is a DJ/Producer these days. You take on additional duties as a sound engineer. How did you find yourself involved in so many aspects of music making at once?*
This is true, when I was first starting this whole music thing when I was 16/17, I was under the impression that in order to be a successful producer you had to know how to mix/master, play instruments, write songs etc… I learned how to play the drums, guitar, piano, and sing just because I thought that’s the way it was supposed to be. I remember listening to artists when I was younger and being like “Damn, wow, Britney Spears rules, she can sing, and make amazing music!!” Little did I know it took like 10 people to make her one song lol. Either way, it still worked out to my advantage that I learned that stuff.
*You’ve played events with some of today’s big producers such as LAKIM. Are live performances and mixing part of your regular repertoire?*
I really enjoy DJing, I learned how to do it so that I could spin my beats live, but it also just turned into something I really liked and got to play tunes I thought were rad for other people. However, I do plan on having some what of a more “Live” band aspect when I preform sets. I’d like to have a DJ set, and a Live set. They both offer different experiences and I love both very much.
*Your refix of OM&M’s “Dirty Paws” may break the million play barrier on SoundCloud. Your “Suga Suga” refix is on a similar trajectory. What is it like watching your tracks suddenly go viral? Is it different each time?*
It’s an insane feeling, it’s never something you expect to happen so when it does it’s really exciting and motivating. Makes me wanna make more tunes for people
*Word is you have an EP in the works. Is this the first of its kind for you? Any teasers on who/what/when this will be coming together? *
I can’t say much about the EP as of now, this will be my debut EP. I’m shooting for Late Fall/Early Winter to release the project. I don’t have a name, but I do have a concept and direction of how and what I want it to sound like. It’s all in a very rough stage, there will probably be 1 or 2 more refixes before that happens as well. I’m definitely excited for people to hear my original work, I really just do refixes for fun!
*Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Before you go, pay-it-forward and give us a young name (or tune) in the game who you’d like our readers to check out!*
Thank you guys, I had a blast! Oooooooooo this is tough, so much talent happening right now. The first name that pops into my head is Jonah Baseball, that is definitely someone to watch out for. His releases so far on SoundCloud are really ill.
